10. Book Title:-  International Social Work Research: Issues and Prospects

Edition:
Author:  Tony Tripodi,
                 Miriam Potocky-Tripodi
Publisher:-   Oxford University Press, USA
Size:- 5.42 MB
Page:-  272 pages
Price:- US$29.95
ISBN:-   0195187253

Features:- With the constant exchange of international information now a permanent condition in the world, social work scholars and students must be sensitive to the need for knowledge sharing between countries as well as to issues involved in obtaining and utilizing international knowledge. Yet until now, no book has juxtaposed these two growing streams of emphasis. In this clearly written volume, Tony Tripodi and Miriam Potocky-Tripodi fill that gap, presenting readers with the many prospects and great potential for international social work research.
The authors establish three discrete varieties of research supra-national, intra-national, and trans-national and explore a wealth of issues and examples within each. The easy-to-follow format helps readers learn how to define and distinguish each kind of research, then provides actual applications of all three. Examples draw on research from the world over, and range from microcredit programs in India to migrant aid in Nicaragua to adoptees in Romania. These unique features make it an ideal sequel to basic research texts in social work and supplement to texts on international social work, but also an attractive addition to any faculty researchers bookshelf.

20. Book Title:-  Becoming a Researcher: A Research Companion for the Social Sciences

Edition: 2005
Author:-  Mairead Dunne,
                John Pryor,
                Paul Yates
Publisher:-  Open University Press
Size:- 1.11 MB
Page:-  208 pages
Price:- US$66.00
ISBN:- 0335213944, 0335213952, 0335224911

Features:- This innovative book combines what most books separate: research as practical activity and research as intellectual engagement. It clarifies and makes explicit the methodological issues that underlie the journey from initial research idea to the finished report and beyond.

The text moves the researcher logically through the research process and provides insights into methodology through an in-depth discussion of methods. It presents the research process as an engagement with text. This theme moves through the construction of text in the form of data and the deconstruction of text in analysis. Finally the focus moves to the reconstruction of text through the re-presentation of the research in the report. Following through each of these stages in turn, the chapters consider either a practical issue or a group of methods and interrogate the associated methodological concerns. In addition, the book also addresses the rarely explored issues of the researcher as writer and researcher identity as core elements of the research process.

The book provides a range of insights and original perspectives. These successfully combine practical guidance with the invitation to consider the problematic nature of research as social practice. It is an ideal reference for those embarking on research for the first time and provides a new methodological agenda for established researchers.

23. Book Title:-  International Cooperation in Research and Development: An Update to an Inventory of U.S. Government Spending

Edition: 2001
Author:  Wagner/Yezril/Hassell
Publisher:-  RAND Corporation
Size:- 3.46 MB
Page:- 66 pages
Price:- US$12.00
ISBN:-   0833029258

Features: Scientific research is becoming increasingly more globalized and more collaborative. At the same time, there is growing pressure within the United States to justify government funding for science and technology (S&T). The potential conflict between these developments raises questions of whether U.S. investment in S&T benefits U.S. taxpayers and whether investment in scientific capacity building overseas has created competition rather than mere assistance. To understand the answers to these questions, this report describes the scope and nature of U.S. spending on international cooperative research and development (ICRD) in fiscal year (FY) 1997. Most spending (over 90 percent) is for collaboration on common research problems among scientists from different countries.Aerospace S&T dominated spending, with biomedical science a distant second. This book finds that the federal government spent $4.4 billion on ICRD in FY 1997, an increase of $1.1 billion over FY 1995. However, this figure may reflect better data collection and increased reporting, rather than an actual increase in spending. The only notable change inthe two-year period involves a substantial increase in cooperative activity with Russia, tied heavily to space-related projects.

29. Book Title:-  Taking Social Research to the Larger World

Edition:- 2005
Author:- Edward B Harvey
Publisher:-  Canadian Scholars Press
Size:- 2.29 MB
Page:-  200 pages
Price:- US$29.95
ISBN:- 1551302551

Features: Taking Social Research to the Larger World is the remarkable story of Professor Edward Harvey’s twin track career as a university professor and consultant specializing in social policy issues – a forty year journey that blossomed with the dynamic Trudeau era and the search for ‘The Just Society.’ In Prime Minister Trudeau’s words: "Until Canada is given the opportunity of utilizing to the full the offerings of all Canadians, the country and the people who live in it will not gain fulfillment." With its richly detailed accounts of early life at Princeton, royal commissions, government task forces, and private sector assignments, this book will be a compelling read for anyone interested in policy, organizational change, equality issues, and the recent history of Canada’s sometimes fragile confederation. Dr. Harvey’s journey is impeccably written and tremendously engaging. The author’s abilities as a story teller are finely tuned. Although biographical, this book is, in large part, a history of Canada too. Context is everything and the author has woven his life together with Canada’s recent past quite beautifully. The author leads us through the strong post-war economic growth and the demographic explosion that came to be known as the baby boom, and on to the resulting dramatic social policy developments. Details of behind-the-scenes events and conversations add humour and realism to the ‘characters’ in a highly entertaining fashion. The author captures the era remarkably well. He intertwines personal interests in jazz, chess, and abstract art with the pursuit of university education and developing an understanding of political and social issues. The author very clearly describes the optimism of the 1950s and early 1960s; the tremendous social revolution of the 1960s; the JFK assassination; and the Marxist 1970s. Canadian society was transformed in many, many ways – health care, education, employment, immigration, urban development, and the quest for equality of opportunity. Themes of intellectual curiosity, a genuine love of learning, brainstorming, camaraderie, and teamwork are evident at every turn. Challenge and innovation have indeed directed Dr. Harvey’s twin track career and unique vision.

30. Book Title:-  Research for Social Workers: An Introduction to Methods

Edition: 2 Ed (2003)
Author: Margaret Alston and
                Wendy Bowles
Publisher:- Routledge
Size:- 1.84 MB
Page:-  344 pages
Price:- US$40.95
ISBN:- 1865088943, 0415307228

Features: Research for Social Workers is an accessible introduction to research methods specifically needed in social work and social welfare. It outlines the major stages of research projects step by step, covering both quantitative and qualitative methods. It offers explanations of how to combine these two traditions in practice, as well as guidelines to analyzing results and reporting. It also includes chapters on needs assessment and program evaluation, both skills essential for human service workers.

As social work practice has become increasingly sophisticated, the role of research in social work has become more critical. Today research is relevant to just about every area of social work practice, from determining needs in the initial stages of an intervention, to planning a course of action, and finally evaluating practice. Springing from the research traditions of sociology and psychology, social work is now developing its own research orientation and knowledge base.

Research for Social Workers is written for researchers without a strong maths background. Illustrated with examples, and accompanied by exercises and questions, it is an ideal introduction for newcomers to research, and a reference for more experienced social work researchers who would like to improve their skills.

34. Book Title:-  Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services

Edition: 2000
Author: Jeane W. Anastas
Publisher:- Columbia University Press
Size:- 7.48 MB
Page:-  608 pages
Price:- US$74.00
ISBN:-  0231118902

Features: Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services integrates a range of research techniques into a single epistemological framework and presents a balanced approach to the teaching of research methods in the "helping professions." Jeane W. Anastas begins with a discussion of the different philosophical perspectives within which social research occurs and continues with problem formulation, research design, and methodological issues influencing data collection, analysis, and dissemination. She presents both fixed (quantitative) and flexible (qualitative) methods of research, granting legitimacy, value, utility, and relevance to both styles of inquiry.

Utilizing complete case studies to illustrate different methodological approaches, Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services integrates material on women and people of color, and draws attention to the ways racism, heterosexism, sexism, and classism affect the conceptualization and conduct of research. Anastas not only exposes these biases but actively addresses the experiences, needs, and concerns of clients of both genders and different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, cultures, and classes.

35. Book Title:-  Reconsidering Conceptual Change: Issues in Theory and Practice

Edition: 2002-03
Author:  Margarita Limón,
                 L. Mason
Publisher:-  Springer
Size:- 7.88 MB
Page:-  440 pages
Price:- US269.00
ISBN:- 140200494X

Features: This book is an important account of the state of the art of both theoretical and practical issues in the present-day research on conceptual change. It is divided into four parts and each of them is commented on by an invited discussant. The two first parts deal with theoretical perspectives on conceptual change. The last two focus more on implications that can be drawn from research and practical aspects to foster knowledge construction and re-construction in the classroom.

Compared with the few other books in the field, the outstanding feature of this volume is its complete treatment of the questions that should be considered to further current understanding of knowledge construction and change. The book highlights the fact that not only purely cognitive aspects are involved in conceptual change processes. It indicates that for students to be able to achieve deep revision of their prior knowledge, it is crucial that they also modify other aspects such as their beliefs about knowledge and knowing, their motivation, affect and achievement goals. Moreover, this book indicates that the social and cultural nature of the contexts in which the change of individuals' conceptions is desired to occur plays an essential role. Complete and informative, this book is useful for psychologists, cognitive scientists, educational researchers, curriculum developers, teachers and educators at all levels and in all disciplines.

                Dr Cathy Lewin (Editor)
Publisher:-  Sage Publications Ltd
Size:- 3.08 MB
Page:-  376 pages
Price:- US$217.18
ISBN:-  076194401X

Features: "This book provides an excellent balance between theory and practical application in social research. The book works well to develop students' understanding of particular methods of inquiry, embedding them within "real world" settings. I envisage that it will help students to understand the nuances of particular approaches, the complimentarity of certain methods, and the areas of conflict/contention within social research in a way that overcomes the sometimes abstract nature of these discussions" - Dr Jon Tan, School of Education and Professional Training, Leeds Metropolitan University
"This book unlocks all of the important areas of social science research in an easily digestible and stimulating style. Both students and supervisors in a range of disciplines will find this an excellent resource" - Fazal Rizvi, Professor in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Rather than being written by one or two `generalists', this innovative book is written by a large number of active researchers about their specialisms in methods/methodologies.
The book introduces all the key qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and methods and seeks to draw readers into a community of researchers engaged in reflection on the research process. Included are narrative accounts of carrying out a research study that explore the way in which the research design and methods are shaped by the methodology, discussing problematic issues, and reflecting on the way in which knowledge and understanding develop. Aimed at researchers and postgraduate students, it will also be invaluable for students at masters level.
Click on the companion website logo above to access additional resources and links to accompany each chapter in the book.
"Research Methods in the Social Sciences is a valuable pedagogical tool. It is organized as a dialogue between theory and key concepts, and practice - stories from the field allowing novices and scholars alike to see how critical interpretive research is actually conducted" - Norman K Denzin, University of Illinois

38. Book Title:-  Practice as Research: Approaches to Creative Arts Enquiry

Edition: 2007
Author:-  I. B. Tauris
Publisher:-
Size:- 2.4 MB
Page:-  224 pages
Price:- US$85.00
ISBN:- 1845114329

Features: Practice-led research is a burgeoning area across the creative arts, with studio-based doctorates frequently favoured over traditional research. Yet until now there has been little published guidance for students embarking on such research. This is the first book designed specifically as a pedagogical tool and is structured on the model used by most research programmes. A comprehensive introduction lays out the book's framework and individual chapters provide concrete examples of studio-based research in art, film and video, creative writing and dance, each contextualised by a theoretical essay and complete with references. More than a handbook, the volume draws on thinkers including Deleuze, Bourdieu and Heidegger in its examination of the relationship between practice and theory, demonstrating how practice can operate as a valid alternative mode of enquiry to traditional scholarly research. Taking pains to elaborate methodologies, contexts and outcomes, and emphasising the process of enquiry and its relationship to the research write-up or exegesis, this is an indispensable tool for educators and students.
